Ottoman Curtain for the Shrine of Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Kilani

By the royal command of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, this magnificent Ottoman curtain was crafted and presented as a precious gift to the shrine of al-Ghawth al-A‘zam, Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Kilani, to stand as an eternal testament uniting the majesty of kingship with the dignity of sainthood. The curtain measures three and a half meters in height and two and a half meters in width, and it embraced the noble tomb for thirty-eight years, like a cloud of sanctity shading the shrine, or a wing of light outspread over the exalted sanctuary.

At its lower edge is inscribed in bold script that it was endowed by the Imperial Chancery to the Province of Baghdad, bearing witness that the Sultan did not grant it merely as an ornament, but as a pious endowment dedicated to God, seeking blessing through the great saint. Around its borders are inscribed the names and honorific titles of the Sheikh, encircling like stars around a shining moon, radiating reverence into the breath and solemnity into the soul. At its center are verses drawn from his own poems, fragrant with devotion and luminous with remembrance, pouring forth intimacy and humble supplication.

The Sultan’s tughra (imperial calligraphic emblem) is also inscribed, a majestic seal among the decorations, declaring that the hand which ordered its weaving is the very hand that gifted the curtain to the sacred tomb. Above it is written in clear script: This is the curtain of the tomb of Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Kilani, crowned with Qur’anic verses and encircled by the names of the Prophet’s Household (peace be upon them), so that majesty is perfected and veneration increased.

Thus, this curtain was not merely a fabric of silk, but a document of history and spirit, an enduring covenant between the Sultan of the earth and the Pole of Heaven, a beauty beyond price and a sanctity that defies extinction.

بأمر سام من السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني صنعت هذه الستارة العثمانية البديعة وأهديت إلى ضريح الغوث الأعظم الشيخ عبد القادر الكيلاني لتغدو شاهدًا خالدًا يجمع بين مهابة الملك وكرامة الولاية. جاءت الستارة في طول يبلغ ثلاثة أمتار ونصف وعرض يناهز مترين ونصف فظلت تعانق القبر الشريف ثمانية وثلاثين عامًا كأنها غمام قداسة يظلّل المقام أو جناح نور يبسط رفرافه على الحضرة العلية. وفي أسفلها كتب بخط جلي أنها أوقاف للديوان الهمايوني إلى ولاية بغداد شهادة على أن السلطان لم يجعلها زينة فحسب بل أوقفها خالصة لله تعالى متوسلًا ببركة الغوث الكبير. وحول حاشيتها زخرفت أسماء الشيخ وألقابه دائرة كالنجوم حول بدر منير تبث في الأنفاس مهابة وفي الأرواح وقارًا. وفي وسطها سطرت أبيات شعرية مقتبسة من قصائده عابقة بالوجد مشرقة بالذكر تفيض أنسًا وتهجدًا. وكما رسمت الطغراء بتوقيع السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني فكانت ختمًا مهيبًا بين النقوش تشهد أن اليد التي أمرت بالنسج هي ذاتها اليد التي أهدت الستارة للقبر الشريف. وفوقها كتب بخط جليل هذه ستارة قبر الشيخ عبد القادر الكيلاني تتوجها آيات قرآنية وتحيط بها أسماء آل بيت النبي صلى الله عليه وآله فيكتمل بها الجلال ويزداد بها الوقار. فهذه الستارة لم تكن مجرد نسيج من حرير بل وثيقة تاريخ وروح وعهد خالد بين سلطان الأرض وقطب السماء وجمال لا يقدر بثمن وقداسة تأبى الزوال.
